Representative Lauren Boebert fiercely defended a social media post featuring comedian Dave Chappelle, responding to accusations that she exploited their encounter for political gain. She argued Chappelle himself had already ignited debate surrounding transgender issues through his widely-discussed comedy routines.
Boebert dismissed Chappelle’s criticism, referencing a recent interview where he expressed his displeasure. “Dave Chappelle can have his little counseling session with NPR,” she stated, framing his concerns as insignificant compared to the larger issues at play.
The controversy stems from a November 2023 photograph Boebert shared on social media with Chappelle and Representative Anna Paulina Luna. The caption, “Just three people who understand that there’s only two genders,” quickly drew attention and ultimately led to the tweet’s deletion.
Chappelle recounted the moment, explaining he was inundated with photo requests on Capitol Hill and reluctantly agreed to pose with Boebert after already taking numerous pictures. He felt betrayed when she immediately used the image to advance a political agenda, stating she “weaponized” the encounter.
The comedian’s Netflix specials, including “Sticks & Stones,” “Equanimity,” and “The Closer,” have consistently addressed transgender issues, sparking intense debate and placing him at the forefront of a cultural clash. Chappelle now claims Boebert unnecessarily dragged him into the political arena.
Boebert countered that Chappelle had willingly entered the conversation through his comedic work. “I think he's done that quite a bit, has he not?” she questioned, suggesting his previous material already invited public discourse.
When pressed on whether she believed she politicized the moment, Boebert asserted the issue’s importance justified political engagement. She spoke with stark intensity about concerns regarding gender-affirming care for minors.
Boebert delivered a particularly forceful statement, contrasting medical procedures for animals with those performed on children. “They're castrating our children and destroying them, absolutely ruining their lives over it,” she declared. “In Colorado… We castrate bulls not baby boys. Okay? And that's what it should be.”
