GAMBLING SHIFT: Licensed Sites DOMINATE – Is Your Money SAFE?

GAMBLING SHIFT: Licensed Sites DOMINATE – Is Your Money SAFE?

A groundbreaking study in Germany reveals a significant shift in the online gambling landscape. For the first time, data suggests the vast majority of players are choosing licensed, regulated platforms over illegal, offshore operators.

The research, conducted by the Blockchain Research Lab and commissioned by the German gambling regulator, the GGL, estimates that a remarkable 77.03% of all online gambling activity within the country now occurs on legal sites. This leaves just under 23% flowing to unauthorized providers – a surprisingly low figure in a global market often dominated by the black market.

This wasn’t simply a guess. Researchers meticulously surveyed gamblers themselves, directly asking where they placed their bets. The results provide a scientifically-backed “channelization rate,” confirming the GGL’s long-held belief that its regulatory framework is effectively capturing the market.

GGL board member Ronald Benter emphasized the importance of this data, stating it validates their “evidence-based regulation” approach under the 2021 State Treaty on Gambling. The findings aren’t just reassuring; they’re a powerful tool for future policy decisions.

Interestingly, this success story stands in stark contrast to other nations. Recent analyses of the U.S. market show a much higher percentage – around 74% – of revenue going to offshore, unregulated sites. Even Sweden and the Netherlands are struggling to keep players within legal boundaries.

Despite this positive outcome, German regulators aren’t resting on their laurels. Combating illegal gambling remains a top priority, and the GGL is pursuing a comprehensive strategy targeting every aspect of the illicit operation – from game suppliers to payment processors and even the digital infrastructure itself.

The GGL understands this is a long-term battle, a “marathon, not a sprint.” They are actively collaborating with licensed operators and authorities across Europe to limit the reach of illegal platforms and encourage the use of tools designed to protect players within the regulated market.

The study’s methodology and detailed findings were presented at the 23rd Gambling Symposium, highlighting the commitment to transparency and data-driven decision-making. A reliable data foundation, officials say, is absolutely crucial for effective regulation.

This commitment to scientific rigor signals a future where German gambling policy will continue to be shaped by concrete evidence, ensuring a safer and more controlled environment for players while effectively curbing the influence of the black market.
