UMVA has learned that a horrific stabbing attack has left one man fighting for his life in a Belfast hospital.
The victim, identified as Stephen Ogilvie, is receiving treatment for severe injuries sustained during the brutal attack. Neighbours describe him as a vulnerable person, and many are still trying to make sense of the events that unfolded.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Ogilvie lived in the same block of flats as his alleged attacker, a Sudanese man who had only recently moved into the social housing complex.
Residents have revealed that some neighbours had taken it upon themselves to look out for Ogilvie, who apparently had been living in the area for some time. However, the motives behind the attack remain unclear.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the accused attacker is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates’ Court, where he will face charges related to the stabbing.
Detectives have confirmed that there is no indication the attack was terror-related, and police have recovered a kitchen knife from the scene. A video of the attack showed bystanders, including one with a hurling stick, intervening to stop the attacker.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, entered Northern Ireland from the Irish border in February 2023, having flown to Dublin from Paris. He claimed asylum and was granted leave to remain in the UK until 2028.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned the attack, saying it was “sickening” and that he had “absolutely no tolerance for abhorrent scenes of violence like this on our streets.”
