The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) is taking proactive steps to mitigate the effects of drought in the country ahead of the next cropping season, as water levels in major reservoirs remain below normal.
According to Acting Division Manager Roald Marck J. Revellame, the agency has been coordinating with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and other government agencies to prepare for dry conditions.
As part of its drought mitigation measures, NIA is promoting alternate wetting and drying irrigation, adjusting cropping calendars, implementing rotational water delivery, and expanding solar-powered pump systems.
Reservoir levels remain a concern, with Acting Division Manager Revellame stating that they are currently five meters below the target water level.
The agency is working closely with other government agencies to prepare for the dry season and minimize the impact on agriculture.
