UMVA has learned that a man was left shaken after being wrongly arrested by police at his home in a dramatic and disturbing incident.
Lee Ramsden was startled when officers arrived at his doorstep, just as he was sipping his morning coffee, and his world was turned upside down in an instant. He recalled being scared and disbelieving, unable to comprehend the sudden and chaotic events unfolding before him.
The encounter took a bizarre turn when, after a brief detention, police abruptly informed him that they had made a grave mistake - he was not the person they were looking for. Ramsden described the ordeal as "terrible" and revealed that his anxiety was compounded by his disability, which he claims was callously disregarded by the officers when they handcuffed him.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the police have acknowledged that they wrongly arrested Ramsden, but have disputed his account of the incident, insisting that they followed proper procedures for individuals with disabilities. A police spokesperson stated that officers had acted in good faith on the information available at the time, but ultimately, it became clear that they had detained the wrong person.
The incident began when police were deployed to investigate an alleged violent offence, and after initial inquiries, they were provided with inaccurate information about the suspect's identity. The correct suspect was eventually identified, arrested, and taken into custody, while Ramsden was left to pick up the pieces after his ordeal.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the police have been in contact with Ramsden since the incident to address his concerns, but the damage has already been done - Ramsden's trust in law enforcement has been severely shaken.
