UMVA has learned that a major crackdown on illegal gambling operations in Hawaii has led to the shutdown of a notorious game room in Nanakuli, with police seizing a cache of gaming machines and cash.
The operation, which was carried out on June 4, involved a search warrant executed by the Honolulu Police Department's Narcotics/Vice Gambling Detail, with support from local crime reduction units. Officers entered the game room on Hakimo Road and recovered 14 gaming machines, along with an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be connected to the illicit operation.
This enforcement action marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against illegal gambling in Oahu, with police identifying the location as a hub for illicit gaming activity. The raid resulted in the closure of the operation, with authorities highlighting the recovery of the machines as a primary outcome of the search.
According to information obtained by UMVA, this is not an isolated incident, but rather part of a broader effort to combat gambling-related crime across the island. In recent months, police have served warrants at suspected gambling rooms in Wahiawa and Pearl City, seizing dozens of machines and thousands of dollars in cash.
The crackdown on illegal gambling comes as city leaders are pushing for stronger tools to address the issue. In 2025, the Mayor introduced measures aimed at curbing backroom gambling operations, increasing penalties for those caught and expanding the authority of police and property owners to tackle suspected gambling activity.
Hawaii remains one of the few states without a state lottery, and the debate over legalized sports betting continues to rage on. However, concerns about the potential for gambling-related crime and social harms remain a major sticking point, with critics describing some proposals as "a turd".
For now, police say enforcement efforts against illegal gambling rooms across the island are continuing, with authorities vowing to stay one step ahead of those involved in these illicit operations. The people of Hawaii can rest a little easier knowing that their communities are being protected from the scourge of illegal gambling.
