BUSTED: 31 Homes Raided, Suspect SMASHED by Peel Police!

BUSTED: 31 Homes Raided, Suspect SMASHED by Peel Police!

A shadow fell over the small businesses of Peel Region, a series of break-ins targeting the easily converted – laptops, phones, and cash vanishing into thin air. The thief, operating with a chilling practicality, favored industrial areas and often concealed his face behind a COVID-era mask, blending into the background as he systematically stripped businesses of their valuables.

Detective Joe Cardi of Peel Police described a calculated operator, someone who understood the resale value of his targets. The losses quickly mounted, reaching an estimated $200,000 in stolen computer equipment alone, including one brazen incident where fifteen laptops, worth $35,000, disappeared in a single night.

Police circulated a description: a Black male, approximately 5’7” and 180 pounds, with short black hair and brown eyes, last seen wearing a black North Face jacket, black pants, and a blue Nike hat. But leads dwindled, and the trail grew cold, leaving investigators scrambling for a breakthrough.

Kenneth Levy. PEEL REGIONAL POLICE HANDOUT

Unbeknownst to the suspect, a specialized unit was already on his trail – the BEAR Unit. In just six months, this proactive team had already made 55 arrests, laid 366 charges, and recovered a staggering amount of stolen property, including 184 vehicles. Their reputation preceded them; they were a force to be avoided.

The BEAR Unit detected a pattern, a frequency to the crimes that hinted at a single perpetrator. They picked up a crucial clue: the suspect was heading east, boarding a VIA train bound for Montreal. Recognizing the urgency, they immediately reached out to police services across Ontario, initiating a coordinated pursuit.

The collaborative effort paid off. With assistance from Kingston, Ottawa, and Cornwall police, along with VIA Rail personnel, officers intercepted the suspect aboard the train. Levy, a 39-year-old from Mississauga, was taken into custody, facing a staggering 62 criminal charges.

Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah, left, speaks to the media at Pearson airport after a 30-year-old man was shot dead by officers in the departure area following a dispute Thursday, April 24, 2025.

The charges included 27 counts of break-and-enter and 27 counts of using a disguise to commit a crime. Investigators anticipate further charges will be laid by Toronto and Halton Regional Police, expanding the scope of the investigation.

Chief Nishan Duraiappah emphasized the importance of the BEAR Unit’s work, stating that property crimes erode community safety and will not be tolerated. The arrest sends a clear message: those who prey on businesses will be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice.

While the case is now before the courts, and Levy remains innocent until proven guilty, the apprehension marks a significant victory for law enforcement and offers a measure of relief to the businesses that were targeted. The upcoming trial promises to be a compelling examination of the evidence and a testament to the power of collaborative policing.
