The partnership addresses a gap left by traditional fuel cards, which were never designed to handle home electricity payments for fleets.
Analysis of fleet charging data shows that only 27 percent of electric vehicle charging expenses are incurred through public networks, while the remaining 73 percent occur at drivers’ homes, typically during overnight sessions. This split highlights the challenge fleets face: balancing on‑road and at‑home charging costs.
Fuel cards have historically managed only public fueling transactions, leaving home charging expenses unmanaged for fleet operators. As a result, many managers must manually verify each driver’s home energy bill, a process that is both time‑consuming and error‑prone.
Visa’s open‑loop payment system, Visa Fleet 2.0, provides real‑time tracking and spend controls for public charging, ensuring seamless acceptance wherever Visa cards are accepted. However, the system does not natively support home energy billing.
Rightcharge’s platform bridges this gap by integrating with individual drivers’ home energy tariffs. It calculates the exact cost of each charging session, reimburses drivers automatically through a direct payment to their energy bill, and confirms that only work vehicles are charged.
The platform’s accuracy is critical given the differing advisory rates set by HMRC: 7p per mile for home charging versus 15p for public charging. Accurate reimbursement makes home charging the cheaper option for fleet operators.
Certification under Visa’s Ready for Fleet programme confirms that Rightcharge meets stringent standards for functionality, integration, and security. The endorsement also places the company within Visa’s global network of issuers and mobility providers, potentially accelerating adoption across UK fleets.
