WEGOVY IS HERE: The Weight Loss Revolution Just Hit the Philippines!

WEGOVY IS HERE: The Weight Loss Revolution Just Hit the Philippines!

A new option has arrived for Filipinos struggling with obesity and related health issues. A medication designed to aid weight management, and address associated conditions, has recently become available.

The drug, called Wegovy, utilizes a molecule called semaglutide. This remarkable substance mimics a natural hormone in the body, GLP-1, which plays a crucial role in regulating appetite.

By mimicking GLP-1, Wegovy helps individuals feel fuller for longer. This sensation of fullness can be a powerful tool when combined with a balanced diet and regular physical activity, potentially leading to significant weight reduction.

Many are asking how Wegovy differs from Ozempic, another medication from the same company. While both contain semaglutide, they are intended for different purposes: Wegovy specifically targets weight management, while Ozempic is designed for individuals with type 2 diabetes.

The difference extends to dosage as well. Ozempic utilizes lower doses suitable for diabetic patients, whereas Wegovy begins with a lower dose but gradually increases to higher levels. Experts note that a higher dose of the GLP-1 molecule generally correlates with greater weight loss.

Wegovy is intended for adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher, classifying them as obese. It is also an option for those with a BMI of 27 or higher who have at least one weight-related health condition, such as diabetes.

Administered as a weekly injection, Wegovy requires ongoing medical supervision. This ensures appropriate use and monitoring for any potential effects.

The Philippine Food and Drug Administration has approved Wegovy as a prescription medicine. Several injection strengths are available – 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, and 2.4 mg – and are listed on the FDA’s verification portal.

Like many medications, Wegovy can cause side effects. The most commonly reported are gastrointestinal issues like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These effects are typically mild to moderate and often subside over time.

Initially, Wegovy will be available in pharmacies throughout Metro Manila, with plans for a wider rollout to key cities across the nation. Pricing will vary depending on the pharmacy.
