One person is dead after a fire late Sunday in a seniors building downtown.

Toronto Fire were called around 10 p.m. to a highrise in the Yonge and Gerrard Sts. area and found a fire in a unit on the 8th floor.

Chief Jim Jessop said Monday that crews were met with “heavy smoke and heat” and had to “force their way” into the unit.

“Crews immediately started their primary search while other crews arrived to back them up and start firefighting operations,” he said.

One person without vital signs was recovered from a bedroom and lifesaving measures were conducted before the person were transported to hospital, where they were declared dead.

There was no immediate information on the age or gender of the victim.

Toronto Fire Services (TFS) are working with the Ontario Fire Marshal to determine the origin and cause of the fire, officials said. It was not immediately known the status in the building of smoke detectors or fire alarms.

“Our deepest condolences to all of those affected by this tragedy,” TFS said in a post on X.
