The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons women’s volleyball team finally broke a frustrating four-game losing streak, defeating University of the East in a decisive match at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The 25-21, 25-15, 25-14 victory injected new life into their UAAP Season 88 semifinal hopes.
Kianne Olango spearheaded the Maroons’ attack, delivering a powerful performance with 18 points. Her impressive stat line included 14 hits, three crucial blocks, and a well-placed ace, alongside seven excellent receptions. Early in the season, UP, guided by Italian mentor Fabio Menta, stunned the league with a remarkable 3-1 start. A monumental upset against the defending champions, National University, ignited excitement, but a subsequent slump threatened to derail their momentum.
A significant blow to the team came with the ACL injury to Casiey Dongallo. Her absence visibly impacted the Fighting Maroons, contributing to their losing streak. The team struggled to regain its balance, but Sunday’s victory signals a potential turning point.
Skipper Niña Ytang contributed 14 points, showcasing her leadership and offensive prowess, while Jelai Gajero added 11. Jaz Manguilimotan orchestrated the offense with 20 sets, and libero Yesha Capistrano anchored the defense with 17 digs and 13 receptions.
Coach Menta acknowledged the challenges posed by Dongallo’s injury, stating the team needed time to reorganize and find a new equilibrium. He expressed optimism as UP prepares for a challenging upcoming match against the undefeated De La Salle University.
The standings remain tightly contested, with Far Eastern University and University of Santo Tomas currently holding third and fourth place with 5-3 records. The race for a semifinal berth promises to be fiercely competitive.
For University of the East, the search for their first win continues. Despite a valiant effort from Khy Cepeda, who tallied 12 points, 17 receptions, and 10 digs, the Lady Warriors suffered their ninth consecutive defeat and 23rd straight loss dating back to last season.
In men’s action, National University reclaimed sole possession of second place after a hard-fought victory over Far Eastern University. Leo Ordiales and Buds Buddin led the charge with 30 and 25 points respectively, securing the win in five sets.
The University of the Philippines men’s volleyball team also found success, ending a frustrating five-game slide with a 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20 win against University of the East. Nigerian ace spiker Olayemi Raheem dominated with 20 points, leading the team to a much-needed victory.
UP’s win against UE improves their record to 3-6, offering a glimmer of hope as they navigate the remainder of the season. The team demonstrated resilience and determination in overcoming their losing streak.
