A devastating three-alarm fire consumed the clubhouse of the Toronto Humber Yacht Club in Etobicoke in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Flames erupted around 4:50 a.m. near Humber Valley Rd. and Glenaden Ave. E., quickly engulfing the building and summoning a massive emergency response.
Firefighters battled the blaze for over an hour, finally bringing the bulk of the fire under control around 6:30 a.m. Nearly 100 firefighters and 27 trucks were deployed to contain the inferno, a testament to its intensity. Thankfully, no injuries were reported amidst the chaos.
The fire occurred just days after the city council voted to terminate the yacht club’s lease, a decision stemming from years of community complaints and environmental concerns. The club, a fixture in the area for seven decades, was slated to vacate the property by Thursday.
Hours before the fire, the club had initiated legal action, filing for an emergency stay to remain on the property while the lease dispute was considered in court. Vice-Commodore Wilson DaSilva expressed the devastation felt by members, emphasizing the club’s 70-year history within the community.
DaSilva’s statement also called for a thorough investigation, expressing hope that any deliberate act would be brought to justice. The club, known for its working-class roots despite its name, now faces an uncertain future.
The Office of the Fire Marshal has been called in to determine the cause of the blaze, initiating a full investigation. The investigation will attempt to uncover how the fire started and if any foul play was involved.
Jason Sills, a local resident who spearheaded the campaign to end the club’s lease, described the fire as “unfortunate.” He had envisioned the building repurposed as an outdoor education centre, a potential loss for the community.
Sills also voiced a desire for a swift and conclusive police investigation, hoping for appropriate charges to be filed if the fire is found to be intentionally set. The incident has ignited a complex mix of emotions within the community.
Despite the extensive damage to the clubhouse, reports indicate that boats stored on the property were spared from the flames. The investigation continues, seeking answers and closure in the wake of this destructive event.
