Woman Killed in Shooting Sparked by Dispute Over Parking Spot

A 44-year-old woman was shot dead in California after attempting to rescue her husband from an armed confrontation sparked by a stolen motorcycle. Ruth Ann Cummings was inside her SUV when gunman Luis Villachana opened fire outside a home in Oildale, California, striking her and causing fatal injuries.

Villachana, 51, was found guilty of first-degree murder, burglary, and attempted murder following a trial in Kern County. The shooting occurred on August 29, 2024, and the trial was held earlier this year.

The confrontation began when Villachana discovered his motorcycle had been stolen from his home. Instead of contacting the police, he enlisted the assistance of two other people to help him find the stolen motorcycle. Their search led them to a house in Oildale, where Villachana found the bike inside the garage.

Villachana then entered the property and confronted one of the roommates who lived at the house. He loudly demanded to know who had stolen his bike and eventually fired a gun towards the man's feet. The situation escalated, and Villachana was eventually struck and injured during a physical altercation.

After learning of the situation, Ruth Ann Cummings drove to the property in an SUV in an attempt to rescue her husband. Villachana threatened to kill Cummings, her husband, and their daughter before opening fire, striking the SUV and fatally wounding Cummings.

Villachana fled following the shooting and remained at large for more than a week before being arrested in Shafter. He now faces up to 50 years to life in prison, plus another 24 years and four months, for his crimes. He is due to be sentenced on August 14.
