JetBlue Pilot Discloses Drone Collision in Air Traffic Controllers' Audio Recording

JetBlue Pilot Discloses Drone Collision in Air Traffic Controllers' Audio Recording

A JetBlue flight crew reported a potential drone collision Monday morning during the aircraft’s final approach to John F. Kennedy International Airport. The incident occurred as Flight 948, en route from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, navigated a critical phase of its descent near a key navigational waypoint.

Audio from air traffic control communications revealed the pilot stating, “We collided with a drone back there in the turn.” The controller confirmed the report, asking, “You said you collided?” The pilot responded, “Yep, it is right above the cockpit.” The exchange took place approximately 10 to 12 miles from JFK at an altitude of 3,000 feet during the aircraft’s alignment for landing.

The pilot specified the collision happened near the ASALT waypoint, a designated location used by pilots to transition into final approach patterns. Describing the encounter, the crew said the drone struck the aircraft “about 10 miles to 12 miles outside of ASALT,” over an area near New Jersey. Air traffic controllers inquired whether the flight required emergency support, but the crew declined, stating, “We don’t need any assistance, we’re just going to go ahead and land.”

The aircraft completed its landing without further complications, and passengers disembarked as normal. A post-flight inspection found no visible damage to the plane. Officials confirmed the FAA will conduct a full investigation into the incident. The airline reiterated its focus on safety protocols and collaboration with regulatory bodies to address the situation.

Controllers concluded the interaction with a brief acknowledgment, “Roger, thank you,” as the pilot added, “Sorry, I couldn’t give you any more details than that.” The exchange highlights ongoing concerns about drone activity near commercial flight paths and the risks posed during critical flight phases.
