Farage’s poll numbers now below Starmer’s ahead of election

Farage’s poll numbers now below Starmer’s ahead of election

Nigel Farage’s approval rating has fallen to its lowest level in a decade, with only 22% of respondents expressing a favourable view and 68% reporting an unfavourable one, resulting in a 46‑point gap between positive and negative opinions.

The decline follows a series of controversies involving donations to his party, including a £5 million contribution received before the 2024 election. An investigation into the source and declaration of that money was halted after Farage resigned his parliamentary seat in Clacton.

He announced a bid to contest the resulting by‑election, framing it as a “people versus the establishment” contest. However, all major parties declined to field candidates, turning the race into a largely novelty affair and leaving a comedic contender as his main opponent.

Despite the low favourability, a spokesperson for the party stated that the ratings were not a concern for the party’s future plans.

In contrast, the newly appointed Prime Minister has achieved a net positive rating, with 38% of respondents viewing him favourably against 35% unfavourably, marking the first such outcome for a prime minister since the previous leader stepped down.

The new Chancellor also holds a net positive rating, contributing to a small but notable shift in public opinion toward the current administration.

Overall, a significant portion of the public remains undecided about the new prime minister, indicating that public sentiment is still evolving in the wake of recent political developments.
