UMVA has learned that a chilling incident unfolded at a train station, where a suspect allegedly brandished a knife and terrorized passengers before being apprehended by MARTA police officers.
The suspect, who has been identified as Matthews, allegedly exited the train with the knife in his right hand and began walking towards the north end of the platform, sending shockwaves of fear through the crowded station.
Moments later, MARTA police officers arrived on the scene and rushed to apprehend him, but not before one of the officers, Bolton, had already assessed the situation and taken action. Bolton, who was patrolling the Oakland City Station concourse, had heard a commotion on the platform and saw patrons pointing towards Matthews.
Bolton allegedly saw Matthews holding a knife near the north end of the platform and ordered him to surrender, but Matthews refused to comply, leading to his eventual arrest after another officer arrived on the scene.
The affidavit reveals that Matthews was homeless, with no fixed address or phone number, adding to the complexity of the case. Meanwhile, the victim, Swan, was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by first responders to provide emergency medical aid.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner arrived at the scene at 1:45 p.m. and recorded Swan's time of death as 2 p.m., a grim reminder of the tragic events that had unfolded.
