A wave of unimaginable grief washed over Redcar, North Yorkshire, on April 9th, when the life of three-month-old Maggie-May Ann Moody was tragically cut short. The tiny infant, barely beginning to discover the world, was the victim of a horrific attack within the safety of a home.
Emergency services responded to a desperate 999 call, arriving at a house on Hardale Grove to find a scene of heartbreaking chaos. Paramedics immediately began CPR, guided by instructions over the phone, but the injuries sustained were too severe. Maggie-May, just days shy of her three-month milestone, could not be saved.
Police arrived to find two dogs present at the address, having reportedly entered the room where Maggie-May lay. Armed officers swiftly intervened, fatally shooting one of the animals, described as a ‘pocket bully’ breed. The second dog was later euthanized by Cleveland Police.
The family, utterly devastated by the loss, released a poignant funeral notice. They remembered Maggie-May as a beacon of joy, a “beautiful baby girl” who brought sunshine even on the darkest days. Her brief life, though tragically short, was filled with an abundance of love and a unique, vibrant spirit.
“Perfect in every way,” her family wrote, “Maggie-May already knew what she liked and made sure we all knew what she didn’t.” They spoke of the smiles, laughter, and enduring warmth she brought to their lives, a warmth that will now forever be tinged with sorrow.
Maggie-May was the heart of her family, cherished by her parents, siblings, grandparents, and extended relatives. The void left by her absence is described as unfillable, a lifetime of memories stolen too soon. Her memory, they vowed, will live on in every cherished moment.
An inquest into Maggie-May’s death opened at Teesside Coroner’s Court, revealing the sequence of events that led to this devastating tragedy. The dogs, initially in the rear garden, had somehow gained access to the room where the infant was located.
Born in Newcastle just weeks prior, on January 10th, Maggie-May’s life was brimming with potential. The inquest heard that her grandmother formally identified her two days after the incident, a heartbreaking task no family should ever have to endure.
Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the investigation. A 45-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog, and later released on bail. Two further arrests followed: a 31-year-old woman on suspicion of child neglect and a 36-year-old man also regarding the dog control. Both have also been released on bail, and are not connected to the family.
The inquest has been adjourned, leaving a community reeling in shock and grief, and a family grappling with an unimaginable loss. The investigation continues, seeking answers and accountability in the wake of this heartbreaking tragedy.
