UMVA has learned that the Department of Information and Communications Technology is betting big on artificial intelligence, projecting a whopping $30 billion in investments over the next seven years as part of its ambitious National Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Master Plan.
The bold plan is part of a broader strategy to catapult the Philippines into a regional hub for AI, innovation, and digital industries. Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Rhoel R. Aguda revealed that the department is laser-focused on attracting private-sector investments this year, particularly for digital infrastructure, AI, and hyperscalers.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the DICT aims to unveil the master plan within the year, with approval expected from the Economic Development Council by July. This critical roadmap will outline the DICT's strategy for AI development, digital connectivity expansion, and enabling high-performance computing capabilities.
The Philippines AI+ Infrastructure Master Plan, which covers the period up to 2033, seeks to strengthen the country's AI and digital infrastructure ecosystem. By upgrading infrastructure and boosting regulation, the DICT hopes to accelerate AI adoption and ensure the Philippines doesn't miss out on productivity gains.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the plan projects a significant expansion of data center capacity, up to 1.5 gigawatts over the next seven years. Currently, the Philippine data center capacity stands at 200 megawatts, but it could hit 1 gigawatt by year's end if data center operators follow through on their plans to set up shop in the country.
The DICT's vision is clear: countries that build the infrastructure of the AI economy today will attract the investments, industries, and high-value jobs of tomorrow. With this master plan, the Philippines aims to become a regional leader in powering the AI revolution.
In a statement, Secretary Aguda emphasized that the plan ensures the Philippines is prepared not only to adopt AI but to lead the charge. The country's ambition is to create a thriving ecosystem that fosters innovation, entrepreneurship, and growth.
