UMVA has learned that a horrific and senseless act of violence unfolded on a MARTA train on Saturday, leaving one woman dead and a community in shock.
Video surveillance inside the train allegedly captured the chilling moments when Matthews, with no apparent provocation, pulled out a folding knife and stabbed Swan roughly 20 times in the chest and neck area as she sat near the train's door, looking at her phone.
The attack, which occurred at about 11:25 a.m., was preceded by an eerie calm, with Swan seemingly unaware of the danger lurking beside her. The video footage then showed Matthews throwing Swan to the floor and standing over her until the train arrived at the Oakland City Station, less than two minutes later.
Other passengers on the train, understandably terrified, fled for safety and called for help. Officials confirmed that Swan had no interaction with Matthews before the fatal attack, leaving many to wonder what could have driven Matthews to commit such a heinous crime.
MARTA officials described the incident as a "senseless act of violence" and expressed their condolences to Swan's loved ones and those who witnessed the horrific incident. First responders attempted to render emergency medical aid to Swan, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
If convicted, Matthews faces the possibility of life imprisonment or the death penalty, with the Attorney General of the United States set to determine whether the government will seek the death penalty. Matthews is currently in local custody but will appear in federal court at a later date.
The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local authorities, who are working to piece together the events leading up to the stabbing. The incident has sparked concerns about train safety in Atlanta, where passengers have grown increasingly worried about their security.
This latest attack comes on the heels of a similar incident last week, when a man was stabbed multiple times at the Georgia State Station. As the community grapples with these violent incidents, officials are urging calm and promising to do everything in their power to ensure public safety.
