UMVA has learned that a dramatic scene unfolded outside a Texas courthouse as Karmelo Anthony's grandmother, Toni Hayes, sparked a fervent reaction from the crowd.
Toni Hayes was caught on camera leading chants of "Racist! Biased! Prejudiced!" as she departed the McKinney, Texas, courthouse, where her 19-year-old grandson, Karmelo Anthony, was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison.
"They sent a message that a white person can hit a black boy and get away with it! They can do whatever the f—k they want!" Hayes exclaimed from her car, her voice filled with anger and frustration.
As she left the courthouse, bystanders surrounded her car, screaming "Free Karmelo" and joining in the chants of "Racist! Biased! Prejudiced!" The crowd's energy was palpable, with some supporters even making hearts with their hands in a show of solidarity.
Additional footage shows Hayes repeatedly chanting "racist, biased, prejudiced" before stepping into her car, her determination to make her voice heard clear.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that Karmelo Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in prison after a jury convicted him of murdering 16-year-old track and football star Austin Metcalf. The brutal stabbing occurred during a championship track meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025.
Supporters of Anthony claim he acted in self-defense, but numerous eyewitnesses testified that Anthony was the aggressor and instigated the fight. The conviction has sparked a strong reaction from Anthony's family and supporters.
In a recent development, Anthony filed a notice of appeal, seeking to challenge his conviction and potentially overturn the outcome.
