A terrifying scene unfolded in the Bronx on Monday afternoon as a city bus, seemingly possessed, careened out of control, leaving a trail of twisted metal and injured in its wake.
The chaos erupted shortly before 2 p.m., stretching over six harrowing blocks between Cauldwell and Trinity Avenues. Witnesses described a runaway vehicle, relentlessly impacting car after car.
The impact zone included a particularly vulnerable location: directly in front of a school on East 163rd Street. Two vehicles bore the brunt of the bus’s force, one violently slammed into a light pole, the other struck broadside.
Further down the road, the destruction continued. An SUV was forced onto the sidewalk, narrowly avoiding pedestrians, while the rear end of a blue coupe was utterly demolished, a testament to the bus’s unstoppable momentum.
Inside the bus, panic seized the passengers. Disturbing video captured the raw terror – screams echoing as the vehicle hurtled forward, its fate uncertain.
Eight people were injured in the ordeal: the bus driver and seven passengers. Emergency responders swiftly transported them to Lincoln Medical, their conditions currently unknown as medical teams assess the extent of their injuries.
Investigators are now meticulously piecing together the events that led to this frightening incident. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is focusing on a range of possibilities, including mechanical failure, adverse weather conditions, and the driver’s potential medical state.
Early reports suggest the bus was ascending a hill when the driver attempted to accelerate. At that moment, a mechanical issue arose, and sources indicate the driver may have engaged the emergency brake, triggering a slide and ultimately, the loss of control.
