The quiet of an Ada, Oklahoma courtroom shattered last month, transforming a routine custody hearing into a scene of startling chaos. An attorney, representing his client, found himself unexpectedly arrested and forcibly removed – a dramatic turn no one anticipated.
The incident unfolded in Pontotoc County, ninety minutes southeast of Oklahoma City, during a hearing before Judge Lori Jackson. Attorney Rob Hopkins was ultimately jailed for contempt of court, the result of a heated and escalating exchange with the judge.
Surveillance and body camera footage reveal a confrontation marked by Hopkins’ active resistance. He physically struggled with bailiffs, at one point sprawling across the judge’s bench, sending papers cascading onto the polished wood.
“You’re HURTING ME!” Hopkins shouted, his voice echoing through the stunned courtroom. His cries intensified, escalating to desperate pleas of “I can’t BREATHE!” as onlookers watched in disbelief.
The disruption began with repeated interruptions from Hopkins, each met with warnings from Judge Jackson about potential contempt charges. The tension quickly spiraled when Hopkins accused the judge of discrimination based on his transgender status.
“It’s because I’m a transgender attorney practicing all over the state,” Hopkins asserted. Judge Jackson’s response was blunt: “I don’t know what you are. I don't know you from Adam.”
The arrival of bailiffs ignited complete pandemonium. Hopkins vehemently protested his arrest, yelling “Do NOT HURT ME!” and claiming he was being “thrown down” as he threw himself onto the bench.
Additional officers arrived to assist, and the commotion drew a growing crowd, spilling out into the hallways surrounding the courtroom. Hopkins’ shouts continued, demanding “Get a female officer, now!” and repeatedly calling for 911.
Amidst the struggle, Hopkins accused the officers of discarding his glasses, a claim contradicted by the available footage. He repeatedly demanded they be replaced, screaming “Put them on my face!” with unwavering intensity.
Following the arrest and subsequent contempt charge, Hopkins has reportedly closed his law firm. He has not publicly addressed the events of the hearing or the reason for his firm’s closure, remaining silent on the unfolding aftermath.
The courtroom, once a place of legal proceedings, became a stage for a dramatic and unsettling display, leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed it.
