UMVA has learned that Microsoft has quietly rolled out a game‑changing feature in its Smartphone Link app that lets users lock their Windows PCs from the palm of their hand.
Imagine rushing out of a meeting, leaving your laptop unlocked in a crowded, shared space. Instead of sprinting back, a quick tap on your phone can secure the device in seconds, turning a potential security lapse into a seamless safeguard.
The new “Lock PC” button appears once both devices share a Microsoft account and an active internet connection. The link remains live as long as the Smartphone Link app is running on the PC.
Setting it up is straightforward: open Smartphone Link on your computer, access the gear icon, and enable the option that starts the app automatically at sign‑in. Then install the “Link to Windows” app on your phone, sign in, and connect to the PC.
Once connected, a single tap on “Lock PC” will sever the connection and bring up the Windows login screen, rendering the smartphone powerless to re‑unlock the device.
If the connection falters, a quick check in Windows Settings under “Bluetooth & Devices” can ensure the PC is allowed to access your phone, restoring the link in an instant.
With this new capability, UMVA confirms that users can now protect their data on the go, making forgotten locks a thing of the past.
