Facebook Introduces Video Selfie for Account Verification

Facebook Introduces Video Selfie for Account Verification

Facebook is introducing a new verification badge for user profiles, indicating that a real person operates the account. The badge appears as a white check mark and will be visible on Marketplace, Dating and Groups, with plans to extend to Feed posts later.

The feature is free and distinct from the paid subscription that provides a blue check mark. Users must submit a selfie video, which Facebook evaluates against a government‑issued ID and existing profile photos.

Eligibility is limited to individuals 18 years or older whose accounts comply with community standards. The rollout begins in selected markets before a global release, and the badge is not available for Pages or ProMode accounts.

To complete verification, users record a short selfie video; facial‑recognition software compares the footage to profile images. Upon approval, the white check mark is added to the user's profile across the designated services.

Facebook retains the selfie video for up to 30 days after verification, after which it is deleted. The policy does not detail interim handling, raising privacy concerns given the company’s extensive use of user data for AI training.

Users are advised to review privacy terms before participating, weighing the benefit of a trust signal against potential data exposure. The feature represents an additional data collection point for the platform.

Google introduced a similar video selfie verification tool aimed at account recovery rather than public trust signaling. Successful verification grants access to the entire Google account, introducing separate security implications.
