California Authorities Seize $104 Million Worth of Illicit Cannabis in Largest-Ever Enforcement Operation

California authorities have made significant strides in combating organized criminal networks across the state, seizing over 63,000 pounds of illegal cannabis worth an estimated $104 million, along with firearms and cash, during a three-month crackdown.

The enforcement operations, carried out between April and June in 10 counties, resulted in the eradication of more than 89,000 cannabis plants, the confiscation of 17 firearms, and the seizure of over $220,000 in cash. A total of 24 arrests were made during the operation.

Since the establishment of the Unified Cannabis Enforcement Task Force in 2022, California has seized and destroyed over 841,000 pounds of illicit cannabis valued at more than $1.3 billion. The state's governor emphasized that disrupting the illegal cannabis market is about more than just seizing unlicensed products, but also about taking on criminal networks, removing illegal firearms, and stopping activity that threatens public safety.

The largest enforcement operation took place between May 14 and June 3 in the southern Central Valley and northern Antelope Valley, where a multiagency effort led by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife served 26 search warrants at illegal cannabis sites in Tulare, Kern, and Los Angeles counties.

Authorities eradicated nearly 24,000 cannabis plants, destroyed around 3,700 pounds of processed cannabis, seized cash, and arrested or cited multiple individuals. Investigators also uncovered numerous environmental violations, including 13 cultivation sites where banned, unregistered, or foreign-labeled pesticides were found or suspected.

Kern County accounted for the largest seizure during the three-month operation, with authorities confiscating over 25,000 pounds of illegal cannabis valued at $41.5 million and destroying 26,442 plants. In Alameda County, authorities seized over 14,500 pounds of illegal cannabis, valued at more than $24 million.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife Director warned that investigators routinely find restricted pesticides at illegal grow sites tied to organized criminal enterprises, posing a threat to wildlife and consumers who may unknowingly use untested, illicit cannabis.
