Joshua Kerry Charged with Assaulting Former MP Ann Widdecombe

The trial of Joshua Kerry, a 28-year-old man accused of murdering Ann Widdecombe, will not begin until next year. Kerry is alleged to have burst into Widdecombe's home in Devon, striking her 21 times with a hammer before driving 265 miles back to his home in Rotherham.

Prosecutors have stated that Kerry allegedly entered Widdecombe's home on July 8 and asked her for bank cards and identification. He then struck her with a hammer, tipping her from her chair and taking a wallet from her handbag. The court heard that Kerry was wearing black gloves and holding the hammer to his side, hiding it from Widdecombe's view.

A provisional cause of death was given as a blunt force injury to the head. Prosecutors have described the attack as 'ferocity of violence' and 'planned and targeted.' Kerry has also been arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, but he has not been charged with this offence.

Kerry appeared emotionless in court, speaking only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. He was described by neighbours as a loner who lived with his dog since his father's death from cancer in December. His mother is believed to have moved away, and his uncle described him as 'a quiet, polite lad, and very shy.'

The suspect has been remanded in custody after appearing at the Old Bailey charged with Widdecombe's murder. A provisional trial date was listed for 8 June 2027, with Kerry set to appear at the same court on 9 October for a case management hearing and 20 November for a further plea and trial preparation hearing.
