A daring escape unfolded at Marwell Zoo as Samba, a capybara, vanished from her temporary enclosure just one day after arriving. The zoo launched an immediate search, alerting the public to her whereabouts and emphasizing her gentle nature, though acknowledging she might be frightened.
Posters quickly circulated, describing Samba as “not dangerous but could be stressed,” a plea to onlookers to prioritize her well-being. Authorities were notified, and a coordinated effort began to locate the adventurous rodent.
Capybaras, often likened in size to some dog breeds, are native to South America and possess an unexpectedly adventurous spirit. These intelligent creatures are known for their calm demeanor, a trait that has recently propelled them to internet fame.
The zoo stressed that while capybaras are harmless, approaching or attempting to capture Samba could cause her undue stress. They strongly advised against any intervention by the public, emphasizing the importance of allowing professionals to handle the situation.
Teams tirelessly searched the surrounding area, even extending the hunt into the night, hoping to bring Samba back to safety. The zoo’s primary concern remained her welfare, a commitment they publicly affirmed.
These large rodents, capable of growing up to four feet long, are typically found grazing on grasses and aquatic plants. Their laid-back personalities have even inspired unique businesses, like capybara cafes in Japan where patrons can interact with and feed them.
Samba and another female capybara had recently been moved to a private habitat to complete a quarantine period and acclimate to their new surroundings. A specially designed habitat, complete with a pond, was nearing completion, intended to be their permanent home.
The escape highlights the capybara’s inherent curiosity and desire for exploration. The zoo continues its search, hoping for a swift and safe return for their newest, and most elusive, resident.
