A 65-year-old man is recovering from serious injuries sustained in a vicious bison attack at Yellowstone National Park. The incident, which was caught on video, occurred on July 10 at the Bridge Bay Campground.
According to eyewitnesses, the man and his grandson were walking along the road, approximately 25 yards away from the bison, when the animal suddenly started running towards them. A video captured by a photographer shows the bison rolling around in the dirt before appearing to settle down. However, the animal was set off by a passing white pickup truck, which prompted it to chase the tourists.
The bison caught up with the man and used its head to upend him, tossing him into the air. The animal was reportedly at least six feet tall, and the man was several feet above it. The incident was witnessed by Mike MacLeod, a professional photographer who was staying at the campground with his wife.
MacLeod stated that the bison was "angry, agitated and charging anything and everything" before the attack. He noted that the man and his grandson were "very respectful" of the wildlife around them and were not at fault for the attack. The National Park Service confirmed that a man was injured by a bison on July 10 and was transported to a nearby hospital.
The incident highlights the importance of maintaining a safe distance from wildlife, as recommended by the National Park Service. The agency advises staying at least 100 yards away from bears, wolves, and cougars, and at least 25 yards away from all other animals, including bison and elk.
MacLeod expressed his surprise at the bison's behavior, stating that he had never seen an animal react in such a way. He noted that the incident was "really weird" and that it's unclear why the bison picked the two tourists.
