UMVA has learned that Texas State Senator Mayes Middleton has stunned the political landscape by defeating U.S. Congressman Chip Roy in the Republican primary runoff for Texas Attorney General.
Middleton, a self‑made oil and gas executive who proudly brands himself “MAGA Mayes,” poured more than $16 million of his personal fortune into the battle, ultimately overcoming Roy’s long‑standing name‑recognition advantage.
In a dramatic turn, Roy conceded shortly after the results were certified, calling Middleton to offer his congratulations before promising a full statement the next day.
The runoff transformed into a high‑stakes showdown over loyalty to former President Trump and the America First agenda, with both candidates positioning themselves as the true heirs of the MAGA movement.
Roy, a former prosecutor and first assistant attorney general, warned that Middleton’s lack of courtroom experience could hinder his effectiveness as attorney general, emphasizing his own years of trial work and judicial advocacy.
Undeterred, Middleton countered by highlighting Roy’s decade of public criticism of Trump, including a House floor remark that labeled the former president’s actions on January 6 as “impeachable conduct.”
Middleton’s campaign unleashed blistering ads that painted Roy as a “backstabbing D.C. Congressman” who abandoned the MAGA cause, while Middleton boasted a clean record of battling the left for ten years.
Now, Middleton will face Democrat Nathan Johnson in November, as Republicans strive to keep the Attorney General’s office firmly anchored in conservative hands following the incumbent’s Senate bid.
