A calculated wave of thefts targeting vulnerable seniors has prompted a police search in Toronto. Investigators are seeking a 37-year-old woman believed to be central to a series of distraction thefts across Scarborough last month.
The first incident unfolded on April 5th near Birchmount Road and Eglinton Avenue East. A man sitting in his car was approached by two women who feigned a need for directions. While he offered assistance, a valuable gold necklace was deftly swapped for a worthless imitation.
The thieves didn’t linger, escaping in a black SUV after the switch. This wasn’t an isolated event; a similar attempt occurred on April 17th near Ellesmere and Wye Valley Roads, though in that instance, the suspect failed to remove a victim’s gold chain.
Police have identified Victoria Miclescu, a Toronto resident, as a suspect wanted for theft over $5,000 and attempted theft. However, the identity of the second woman involved in the initial theft remains unknown, complicating the investigation.
These crimes exemplify a disturbing trend: distraction thefts. These often involve a team, with one individual engaging the victim in conversation while another swiftly steals valuables – wallets, purses, phones, and, as seen in these cases, jewelry.
Public spaces become hunting grounds for these opportunistic thieves, who rely on diverting attention to execute their schemes. Pickpockets and scam artists frequently employ this tactic, preying on the kindness and trust of unsuspecting individuals.
Anyone with information regarding these incidents or the whereabouts of Victoria Miclescu is urged to contact authorities. Tips can be provided anonymously to ensure the safety of those who come forward.
