On November 18 2025, Pittsburgh International Airport opened a new landside terminal costing $1.7 billion, enhancing security screening, baggage handling and parking operations while adding expanded dining, retail and public art spaces.
The terminal was designed by Gensler, HDR and architect Luis Vidal, with the plan incorporating a series of landscaped outdoor terraces intended to provide passengers with fresh air and a calm environment.
Design inspiration drew from the region’s architectural heritage, emphasizing the integration of natural elements common to Western Pennsylvania’s landscape.
Although the terraces were still under construction at the terminal’s launch, the airport completed its first terrace eight months later, marking a significant milestone in the project’s rollout.
The newly opened terrace spans 36,000 square feet on the arrivals level near baggage claims 5 through 8, offering access to both ticketed travelers and local visitors, and includes native plantings, accessible pathways, seating areas and public art.
Airport officials highlighted the terrace’s potential to support physical and mental well‑being by providing a space where people can observe aircraft movements while surrounded by greenery.
Designed to resemble a riverbed, the terrace features multiple walking zones that reflect the visual character of the Western Allegheny Plateau, showcasing 41 species of native trees, shrubs, grasses, ferns and perennials such as American witch hazel, Virginia bluebells and red maple.
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center sponsors the terrace, which is therefore named the UPMC Terrace; sponsorship arrangements for the remaining three terraces have not yet been disclosed.
The terminal’s architectural design earned a place on the 2026 list of the World’s Most Beautiful Airports, a recognition that underscores its aesthetic and functional achievements.
Initially, the airport considered removing the terraces from the design to reduce costs, but post‑COVID‑19 health considerations prompted a reversal, reinforcing the commitment to provide outdoor access for travelers.
Similar outdoor passenger spaces have been introduced at other airports, including a deck at New York’s JFK in 2015, post‑security terraces at San Francisco International in 2019 and 2020, an observation deck at Seattle‑Tacoma International in 2026, and a patio at San Diego International opened in 2025.
The development reflects a broader industry trend toward integrating outdoor amenities that enhance traveler experience and promote well‑being.
