UMVA has learned that a major overhaul of Ontario's education system is set to take effect in the fall, with the provincial government investing $60 million to equip teachers with modernized classroom resources.
The new provincewide digital learning platform, launching on Monday, promises to revolutionize the way students learn, providing access to interactive tools and enabling educators to identify learning gaps earlier. This move is expected to bring greater consistency to education across all 72 school boards.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Education Minister Paul Calandra emphasized that the initiative aims to ensure students learn the Ontario curriculum in a more consistent way, with teachers having better information about student progress to respond quickly to challenges.
The provincial government has secured access to Nelson Education's Edwin platform, covering grades 1-12 in both English and French, which will provide teachers with ready-made lesson plans and resources. This platform, already used by some Ontario school boards, was selected through a competitive procurement process.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that teachers will be able to draw from a variety of materials organized by subject and grade, allowing them to find or build their own resources using interactive tools, activities, videos, and presentations. The implementation team will work with school boards to provide training materials and online demonstration sessions.
The province is also introducing new mandatory changes to assessment standards for grades 9-12, aiming to bring greater consistency to grading and provide clearer guidelines for calculating final marks. This move is expected to help identify trends and direct resources where they are needed most.
School administrators and educators are welcoming the changes, with Brendan Browne, CEO of the Toronto Catholic District School Board, stating that platforms like this help bring learning to life, giving students new ways to engage in their classrooms while supporting educators in meeting the needs of every learner.
