President Trump Declares National Emergency, Calls for Repeal of Housing Overhaul Bill Amid SAVE Act Push

The President has cancelled the signing of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, citing the need for the SAVE Act to be passed first. The cancellation was announced via Truth Social, with the President stating that the Housing Act is of minor importance compared to the SAVE Act.

The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act was passed by House lawmakers by a landslide vote of 358-32 on Tuesday. The bill aims to address housing affordability challenges by expanding the supply of homes and banning large institutional investors from purchasing single-family homes.

The SAVE America Act, on the other hand, includes voter ID and citizenship verification measures that have been a priority for the President. House Speaker Mike Johnson has expressed support for the SAVE Act, stating that it is essential to enforcing existing laws and preventing voter fraud.

Johnson noted that the SAVE Act has been passed by the House three times, but has yet to be approved by the Senate. The bill requires proof of citizenship to register to vote and proof of a photo ID when voting. Johnson emphasized that "basic issues" like this have broad bipartisan support, and that the SAVE Act should be a priority for lawmakers.

The housing package, which includes the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, has been the result of months of negotiations between House and Senate lawmakers. The bill aims to loosen regulations surrounding factory-built homes, ease federal environmental reviews for housing, and encourage local governments to update zoning policies to support more home construction.

Many Americans have struggled to buy a home due to rising prices, with the median nationwide price tag topping $400,000. The housing package aims to address these challenges and provide relief to those struggling to afford a home.
