UMVA has learned that the Dutton family's saga on TV is far from over, with a multitude of spin-offs, prequels, and sidequels transforming Taylor Sheridan's neo-western soap into one of television's most expansive universes.
Aside from the directly related shows, several others are set in the same shared universe, including the latest addition, Dutton Ranch, a direct sequel to the original series. Kelly Reilly reprises her role as Beth Dutton, taking over from Kevin Costner as franchise lead, as she starts a new life on a ranch in South Texas.
Godless, an underrated western gem from Netflix, tells the story of Alice Fletcher, a woman running a small ranch by herself in the small town of La Belle, New Mexico. A mining accident has killed nearly all the men, but hell is coming their way in the form of Frank Griffin, a brutal gang leader on the run.
Territory, set in the Northern Territory of Australia, follows the Lawson family, who have run the world's largest cattle station for generations. The show becomes a twisty-turny fight for the survival of this family dynasty, with Graham's wife, Emily, at the center of the storm.
The Madison, a testament to the power of its creator and the inspired casting of Michelle Pfeiffer in the lead, follows Stacy Clyburn, the matriarch of a rich New York family, as she reconnects with her late husband's isolated tract of land in Montana.
The Abandons finds two indefatigable women, Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, duking it out in 1850 Washington. Lena Headey plays Fiona Nolan, a devout single mother raising four orphans, while Gillian Anderson plays greedy silver mine owner Constance Van Ness.
1883, the first of the spin-offs, is set earliest in the timeline, giving us a bit of Dutton family prehistory. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill play the first generation of the family to make the trip from Texas to Montana on a dangerous wagon train led by Sam Elliott.
The English, set in the waning days of the American Old West, follows Lady Cornelia Locke, who has left England with vengeance in mind. She encounters Mr. Watts, who's been instructed to stop her, but who's also in the process of torturing Eli Whipp, a Pawnee native and former U.S. Army scout.
Heartland, based on a popular book series, follows the lives of a family of horse ranchers in western Canada led by sisters Amy and Lou. This is more family drama than Dutton, with the stakes a bit closer to home, but it's very much got that western feel.
Ransom Canyon, another neo-western, takes us to the center of a land dispute involving multiple overlapping family dynasties. Widowed Staten Kirkland is trying to hold on to his family's land while pursuing a course of vengeance against the man he blames for the death of his son.
Dark Winds, adapted from a series of books, takes us back to the 1970s and the Four Corners region of the American Southwest. Jessica Matten, Zahn McClarnon, and Kiowa Gordon lead the largely Indigenous American cast as three Navajo Tribal Police officers brought together when a bank robbery on the border of the Navajo Nation becomes entangled with the deaths of two Native residents.
1923, a return to the Dutton family of the 1920s, stars Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, with Helen Mirren playing the strong-willed matriarch Cara Dutton, while Isabel May returns from 1883 to narrate the series as Elsa Dutton.
