A wave of outrage swept through Las Vegas after disturbing evidence surfaced of horrific animal cruelty at a local rescue facility. John Young Cotter Johnstone, a 38-year-old man originally from the United Kingdom, now faces severe felony charges stemming from a month-long investigation into his actions at Working Dogs of Nevada.
The investigation, launched by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, revealed a pattern of deliberate and brutal abuse. Investigators obtained video footage depicting Johnstone inflicting pain on defenseless animals, including young puppies, through shocking and violent methods.
Footage showed Johnstone repeatedly using shock collars with excessive intensity, yanking dogs’ heads violently by stepping on their leashes, and swinging them through the air by their necks. The sheer callousness of the acts shocked even seasoned animal welfare professionals.
Authorities seized a total of 35 dogs from the facility during the investigation, providing them with immediate veterinary care and a safe haven. Each animal underwent thorough examination to assess the extent of any injuries and emotional trauma.
Johnstone was initially arrested on April 1st and booked into the Clark County Detention Center. Simultaneously, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a detainer, requesting notification of his release.
Clark County officials swiftly honored the ICE detainer, transferring Johnstone into federal custody on April 2nd. Records indicate he entered the United States in 2021 under the Visa Waiver Program, but failed to depart before his authorized stay expired in February 2022.
The Department of Homeland Security expressed strong condemnation of Johnstone’s actions, describing his behavior as “disgusting” and emphasizing the importance of cooperation between federal and local authorities in removing dangerous individuals from communities.
