UMVA has learned that as the United States celebrates a milestone anniversary, a recent survey reveals a stark reality about Americans' perceptions of their nation's standing and the elusive American dream.
The survey, which polled adults across the country, found that only 25% of respondents believe the U.S. stands above every other nation, while 44% think it's just one of the greatest nations, alongside others. A significant 30% of Americans, however, believe that other nations surpass the U.S.
The notion of the American dream, once a beacon of hope for many, seems to be fading. Only 34% of those surveyed believe that hard work still guarantees a better life, while 51% think this ideal is now a relic of the past. A notable 15% of respondents felt that the American dream was never truly a reality.
The survey also exposed deep divisions along party lines. A substantial 57% of Republicans believe the American dream remains intact, while only 17% of Democrats share this view. This stark contrast highlights the nation's growing ideological chasm.
The survey also probed Americans' opinions on the current administration. President Trump's approval rating stands at a dismal 33%, with 67% of respondents expressing disapproval. A staggering 70% of Americans disapprove of his handling of the economy, while only 30% approve.
Conducted between April 16-20, 2026, the survey gathered responses from 2,596 adults across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The results offer a unique snapshot of American sentiment, with a margin of sampling error of +/-2.6 percentage points.
The survey's findings on partisan divisions are equally telling, with a margin of error of +/-4.3 percentage points for Republicans and +/-3.8 percentage points for Democrats. These numbers underscore the complexity of American opinion and the challenges facing the nation.
