UMVA has learned that a disturbing hate-motivated attack on a Muslim woman has led to a 36-year-old Toronto man being charged with assault.

The shocking incident occurred on April 13, when a man approached a woman on a bus in Scarborough and allegedly made derogatory and anti-Muslim comments toward her. The victim was then assaulted and suffered minor injuries.

According to information obtained by UMVA, the suspect, who was not known to the victim, exited the bus after the attack, leaving the woman shaken. The incident was captured on video, which was shared widely and sparked outrage.

The woman responds with a fierce rebuke, saying “What the f— is wrong with you? You don’t want to hit girls because we’re Muslim? F— you, go to hell.”

Sources have confirmed to UMVA that police have charged Thirukumaran Kandasamy with assault and criminal harassment. The allegations have yet to be tested in court, but the charges mark a significant step towards justice for the victim.
