Kylian Mbappe’s Real Madrid future has been brought into question and a move to the Premier League is most likely if he does leave the Spanish giants.

The 27-year-old is not in the squad for the clash with Barcelona in La Liga on Sunday night, nursing a hamstring injury.

The prolific forward trained this week and looked to have recovered from the muscle problem that had sidelined him previously, but with minutes to go in the final session before this weekend’s fixture, he pulled up and revealed the issue had flared up.

Spanish publication Marca report that his abrupt departure from training came as a surprise to his teammates, who will now be without him for the latest instalment of El Clasico.

It comes after heavy criticism from Real Madrid fans as Mbappe was pictured holidaying on a yacht with his girlfriend while recovering from the hamstring problem.

‘In his free time, Mbappe can do whatever he wants, like any other player,’ said manager Alvaro Arbeloa, but fans did not agree.

An online petition organised by Real Madrid supporters and entitled ‘Mbappe out’ collected over 60 million signatures, although clearly not everyone signing an online petition will necessarily be doing so in good faith.

The France international has scored goals with incredible regularity since joining from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, netting 85 times in 100 games across all competitions.

This season he has scored 41 times in 41 outings, although it does not mean he will be lifting any silverware.

Mbappe’s two seasons in Madrid are going to pass without La Liga, Champions League or Copa del Rey trophies, unless Real can beat Barcelona without him on Sunday then overturn a further eight-point difference over the final three games of the league season.

With unrest in Spain, possible moves for Mbappe have been touted and Arsenal have emerged as favourites to be his next club.

The Gunners are top of the Premier League table with three games to play and into the Champions League final where they face PSG.

Behind Arsenal in the betting are two more English clubs, Manchester United and Chelsea, followed by a move to any French side and a sensational switch to Barcelona.

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit says the Gunners would love to sign the Frenchman, but cannot see it happening just yet.

‘Arsenal would love Kylian Mbappe and he’d be perfect on their left wing,’ Petit told BOYLE Sports, who offer the latest Champions League betting.

‘The only reason I think Mbappe will stay at Real Madrid is because if he leaves without winning a trophy it would make his move a failure.

‘Mbappe has a huge ego so he will probably want to stay and to prove the opposite. I’m pretty sure about that. I don’t see him leaving Madrid, probably the biggest club in the world, unless the decision is made for him.

‘The only way he leaves is if Florentino Perez cracks under the pressure. Four million fans have signed to say they want him to leave the club. That could be the end for Mbappe because Florentino Perez is a political guy.

‘If Arsenal win the Champions League for the first time then it would change the course of their history and send a strong message in the transfer market.

‘Players would of course want to play for the Champions League winners and hope they can go and win it again, it would help them attract Kylian Mbappe if he does leave Real Madrid.’
