A quiet Friday morning in St. Catharines shattered as five masked individuals stormed an apartment, unleashing a wave of terror on its occupants. The incident, unfolding just before 4:00 a.m., involved a brazen home invasion and a subsequent, reckless flight from justice.
The ordeal began with the arrival of a white Acura TLX, later discovered to be stolen from Mississauga. Four of the masked figures forced their way inside, while a fifth remained behind the wheel, poised for a swift getaway. Victims were confronted and personal belongings were stolen during the terrifying intrusion.
Police responded with remarkable speed, arriving at the scene within minutes. However, the situation escalated dramatically as the driver of the stolen vehicle deliberately rammed two police cruisers in a desperate attempt to escape. The other suspects scattered, disappearing on foot into the pre-dawn darkness.
One suspect, the driver of the Acura, was immediately apprehended at the scene. Security camera footage captured the remaining four fleeing westbound on foot near the intersection of Welland Ave. and Lake St., providing investigators with crucial leads. Images of these individuals have now been released to the public.
Joshua Balkaran, an 18-year-old from Elmira, faces a staggering list of charges. These include multiple counts of robbery with a firearm, forcible confinement, break and enter, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He is also accused of assault and possession of stolen property.
Fortunately, despite the violent nature of the crime, no one was physically harmed. The apartment’s occupants and the responding officers escaped injury, a small mercy amidst the chaos. Investigators believe this was a targeted attack, and currently assess there is no broader public safety risk.
Authorities are now appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone with video or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident is urged to come forward. Even seemingly insignificant details could prove vital in identifying and apprehending the remaining suspects.
