A chilling breach of trust unfolded at the Queenston-Lewiston border crossing in Niagara-on-the-Lake, leading to the arrest of two individuals, including a Canada Border Services Agency officer.
The RCMP launched a discreet investigation after receiving concerning information directly from within the CBSA, focusing on a potential violation of established protocols.
Allegations surfaced that a border services officer had bypassed standard procedures, authorizing the entry of a transport truck and trailer suspected of concealing a massive illicit cargo – millions of dollars worth of opium, cannabis, and untaxed tobacco.
Daniel Notarianni, the CBSA officer at the heart of the investigation, was arrested in January. Simultaneously, authorities apprehended Abhishek Abhishek, the driver of the implicated transport truck.
A meticulously executed search warrant targeting Notarianni’s property was carried out on March 6th, yielding further evidence crucial to the case.
Both Notarianni and Abhishek now face a barrage of serious criminal charges, including conspiracy to import controlled substances and multiple counts of trafficking, importation, and possession for the purpose of sale and distribution.
The accused appeared in a Welland court earlier this month, marking a significant step in the legal proceedings.
