A University of Aberdeen staff member has sparked outrage with comments made about the death of former politician Ann Widdecombe. Heather Herbert expressed relief that Widdecombe was dead, stating that she 'doesn't want to see anyone murdered' but is 'still glad she is dead.'
Herbert's comments were reported to the university, which has launched an investigation into her statements. The university's Principal and Vice Chancellor, Professor Peter Edwards, described Widdecombe as a 'highly respected figure' who served in both the Westminster and European parliaments.
The University of Aberdeen has released a statement distancing itself from Herbert's views, stating that they 'do not represent the views of the University of Aberdeen.' The institution emphasized that it does not tolerate violence or hateful behavior in any form.
Aberdeen University rector Iona Fyfe has also weighed in on the situation, acknowledging that she had received numerous emails regarding Herbert's remarks. However, Fyfe emphasized that she has no responsibility over the behavior of staff members.
The police investigation into Widdecombe's death is ongoing, with a 28-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman has confirmed that the police are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the case.
The University of Aberdeen has promised to review Herbert's comments as a priority and has assured the public that complaints into staff behavior are handled confidentially through established processes.
Metro has approached Herbert for comment regarding her remarks.
