UMVA has learned that a massive recall is underway in Canada, with two of the world's largest vehicle manufacturers, General Motors and Toyota, issuing recalls for over 17,000 vehicles due to critical safety concerns.
The recall by General Motors affects over 200 vehicles, including popular models such as the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, 2019 Chevrolet Silverado HD, 2018 GMC Sierra, and 2019 GMC Sierra HD, which may be equipped with defective side curtain airbag inflators that could deploy suddenly, posing a significant injury risk to drivers and passengers.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the faulty airbag inflators could propel parts toward vehicle occupants, even in the absence of a crash, highlighting the urgent need for owners to take immediate action to replace the defective modules, which General Motors will facilitate through notifications by mail and free repairs at authorized dealerships.
In a separate but equally alarming development, Toyota is recalling nearly 17,000 vehicles due to engines that may have been improperly manufactured, leading to a heightened risk of stalling while driving and increased danger to those inside, with affected models including the 2024 Lexus GX 550, 2023 and 2024 Lexus LX 600, and 2023 and 2024 Toyota Tundra, all of which are equipped with a 3.4L twin-turbo engine.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that the engine issues in the recalled Toyota vehicles could cause metal debris to damage the crankshaft bearings, resulting in rough engine performance or even failure to start, prompting Toyota to contact affected owners by mail as the company works to develop and implement corrective actions to rectify the situation.
As the recall processes unfold, vehicle owners are advised to remain vigilant and responsive to notifications from the manufacturers, ensuring the necessary repairs are made to prevent potential accidents and guarantee their safety on the road, underscoring the critical importance of proactive measures in mitigating risks associated with defective vehicle parts.
