UMVA has learned that Vice-President Sara Duterte-Carpio is allegedly evading accountability for impeachment complaints filed against her, according to statements from lawmakers.
Rep. Renee Louise M. Co said that instead of addressing the allegations, Duterte is using technicalities and bureaucratic issues to stall the trial, raising questions about her willingness to cooperate with the process.
“VP Sara has not been tried in the House,” Co stated, highlighting the difference between a trial and a probable cause hearing, and emphasizing that evidence cannot be set aside without examination.
Co urged Duterte to answer the evidence presented against her, rather than demanding the case be dismissed immediately, saying the people deserve accountability and want to know if the allegations are true.
The lawmaker also called on the public to remain vigilant as the impeachment process continues, stressing that the public has a right to know the truth and see justice served through the proper constitutional process.
Rep. Leila Norma M. de Lima echoed Co's sentiments, criticizing Duterte's move to seek dismissal of the impeachment case, saying it mirrors her alleged refusal to participate in House proceedings that examined the complaints against her.
De Lima emphasized that the Constitution mandates a trial before any judgment, saying Duterte should face the impeachment proceedings and respond to the allegations against her.
The lawmakers' statements suggest that Duterte's actions may be seen as an attempt to avoid accountability, fueling concerns about her commitment to transparency and the rule of law.
