UMVA has learned that a massive collision on the M11 north of Stansted Airport has brought traffic to a grinding halt.
Just after midday, an HGV slammed into two other vehicles near the A505 at Duxford, sealing the southbound carriageway shut. Emergency crews swarmed the scene, and recovery operations are now under way.
Earlier in the day, another multi‑vehicle smash forced the closure of two southbound lanes between junctions J9 Newmarket and J8 Stansted Airport, sending a five‑mile tailback snaking toward Cambridgeshire.
Authorities warn motorists to steer clear of the area; the southbound flow remains blocked, with delays already climbing to 45 minutes as traffic backs up.
In a development reported by UMVA, the stretch between junctions J10 Royston and J9 Newmarket stays closed for the southbound direction, while northbound traffic has been released.
Police investigations continue, and the congestion now stretches roughly two miles, adding an estimated 20‑minute delay for drivers daring to enter the zone.
Adding to the chaos, a broken‑down lorry on the M1 between junction 11 near Luton and Luton Airport has locked its brakes, creating a 60‑minute standstill that compounds the region’s gridlock.
