SCHOOL BUS HORROR: Family DEMANDS Justice in $5.6M Lawsuit!

SCHOOL BUS HORROR: Family DEMANDS Justice in $5.6M Lawsuit!

A seven-year-old boy, Dante Caranci, lost his life in a heartbreaking tragedy last December, struck by a vehicle just moments after stepping off his school bus. His family now seeks answers and accountability through a wrongful death lawsuit, alleging a cascade of failures that led to this devastating loss.

The lawsuit details a scene unfolding on Longwoods Road, a route the family contends was known for speeding. Dante, a student at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic elementary school, had just disembarked when a speeding vehicle, driven by Atir Mir, allegedly made no attempt to stop for the activated school bus lights and stop sign.

The impact was catastrophic. Dante was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries the following day, leaving his family shattered. Mir now faces charges of dangerous driving causing death, while the school bus driver, Jose Lema, is charged with criminal negligence causing death.

The family’s claim doesn’t stop with the drivers. It extends to the employers of both men, the transportation company servicing local school boards, and even the city of London itself. They allege a systemic breakdown in safety protocols and a disregard for the well-being of children.

According to the lawsuit, Lema failed to ensure Dante’s safe disembarkation and crossing of the road, allowing him into a demonstrably dangerous situation. The family further alleges that Langs Bus Lines, Lema’s employer, hired inadequately trained staff and ignored previous incidents of students crossing the road unsafely.

The city is accused of negligence in maintaining a safe environment on Longwoods Road, failing to install adequate warning signs or address long-standing concerns about speeding vehicles. Despite repeated complaints, the road remained a potential hazard for children traveling to and from school.

Police investigations confirmed the school bus was properly stopped with its lights and stop arm extended when the collision occurred. Yet, the driver of the SUV, according to investigators, showed no sign of slowing down, resulting in the unthinkable.

The emotional toll on the Caranci family is immeasurable. Dante’s mother, Jacqueline Caranci, recently marked the one-year anniversary of his death with a poignant plea to drivers: “Stop when the school bus lights are flashing.” Her words echo the family’s profound grief and a desperate hope to prevent future tragedies.

The lawsuit details the immense mental anguish, psychological trauma, and financial losses suffered by Dante’s parents, brother, and grandparents. They describe the defendants’ actions as “reprehensible, reckless, malicious,” and a stark deviation from acceptable standards of care.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the Caranci family’s pursuit of justice serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the critical importance of vigilance on our roads, especially when the safety of children is at stake.
