IRAN NOW CONTROLS UN WOMEN'S RIGHTS?! Global Outrage Ignites.

A chilling paradox is unfolding within the halls of the United Nations. Iran, a nation accused of systematic human rights abuses and state-sponsored terrorism, is being entrusted with positions of influence on committees designed to uphold those very principles.

Despite a legal system that severely restricts women’s freedoms, and a documented history of brutal crackdowns on dissent, Iran has been appointed to UN bodies focused on women’s rights, human rights, disarmament, and terrorism prevention. This isn’t an isolated incident, but a disturbing pattern of appointments.

The numbers paint a grim picture. In 2025 alone, Iran carried out 65 executions of women – the highest number in a quarter-century. During protests in January 2026, over 250 women were reportedly killed by government forces. These aren’t statistics; they are lives extinguished.

Images depicting women in various contexts, including portraits, a noose, and stones, highlighting themes of justice and societal issues.

The UN’s own Special Rapporteur has described Iran’s treatment of women as “gender apartheid,” enforced through draconian laws that control every aspect of their lives. The legal age of marriage for girls remains shockingly low, and surveillance of women in public spaces is commonplace.

Beyond the persecution of women, Iran’s human rights record is devastating. Over 2,000 people were executed in 2025, many for drug offenses, and a growing number of those executed are women and members of ethnic minorities. Juvenile offenders are also among those facing the ultimate penalty.

Iran’s role as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism further disqualifies it from positions of authority. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), designated as a terrorist organization by numerous nations, funds and directs proxy groups across the Middle East, and has been implicated in attacks on international targets.

Simultaneously, Iran continues to pursue a covert nuclear program and develop long-range ballistic missiles, posing a direct threat to global security. The provision of drones to Russia for use in Ukraine underscores its willingness to destabilize international order.

Recently, Iran secured a vice-chair position on a UN commission focused on democracy, gender equality, tolerance, and non-violence – areas where its own record is demonstrably abysmal. This appointment occurred without objection, highlighting a critical flaw in the UN’s nomination process.

The UN’s system of regional group nominations allows Iran to secure these positions simply by being present and active within its regional bloc, regardless of its conduct. This process often prioritizes political maneuvering over genuine merit.

Western democracies, while simultaneously designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization, have supported Iran’s nominations, engaging in a diplomatic quid pro quo that undermines the integrity of the UN system. Some believe maintaining a channel for negotiation justifies overlooking Iran’s abuses.

However, this approach grants legitimacy to a regime built on oppression and allows it to obstruct proceedings from within. The UN lacks a mechanism to ensure a country’s domestic conduct aligns with the mandates of the committees it joins, creating a dangerous loophole.

Iran strategically pursues these seats, recognizing the influence and intelligence they provide. The result is a system ripe for exploitation, allowing the most egregious violators of international norms to occupy positions of authority over those very norms.
