UMVA has learned that Keisha Buchanan, a founding member of the Sugababes, was kidnapped at the age of 16, a traumatic experience that had a profound impact on her life and career.
The shocking incident occurred just as the Sugababes were starting to gain momentum, with Keisha being thrust into a grueling schedule of shows and studio sessions. She was snatched after school, around the time she was meant to be taking her GCSE exams, forcing her parents to pull her out of school to cope with the trauma.
Keisha revealed that she was held captive for several hours, a harrowing experience that she described as a "long time" for a child. Despite the trauma, she went through therapy to process her emotions and has remained a vocal advocate for support and understanding ever since.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Keisha's parents decided to take her out of traditional schooling due to the traumatic experience, and she finished her education in a different way. She was unable to take her GCSEs, a significant milestone that she had been looking forward to.
The kidnapping experience had a lasting impact on Keisha's life, but she has chosen to channel her emotions into her music and her advocacy work. She plans to share more details about the incident, as well as the Sugababes' infamous lineup changes, in her forthcoming memoir.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that Keisha's memoir will provide a candid look at the highs and lows of her career, including the Sugababes' rapid rise to fame and their eventual split in 2011. The band has since reunited, with the original trio reclaiming their Sugababes name in 2021 and embarking on a successful tour.
In a remarkable display of resilience, Keisha reflected on the Sugababes' journey, saying that she feels grateful to have made it through the challenges they faced. She attributed her survival to "God's grace," acknowledging that there were many times when it seemed unlikely that they would overcome the obstacles in their path.
