A Russian man is currently facing treason charges as a result of allegedly providing military secrets to agents from New Zealand, a country that is part of the renowned “Five Eyes” alliance. The suspect, aged in his mid-50s and residing in Khabarovsk, Russia, was apprehended by the Federal Security Service (FSB) after offering information that could hurt Russia’s security. The agency made this announcement on Monday. New Zealand is a crucial member of the Five Eyes, teaming up closely with the US, UK, Australia, and Canada.
In a twist of events, according to Russian counter-espionage authorities, the New Zealanders were specifically interested in obtaining classified information regarding military collaborations happening in the Asia-Pacific region. It is alleged that the suspect sold his home-grown secrets to the foreigners for monetary gain, specifically US dollars.
Following a thorough investigation at the individual's residence, the law enforcement officers discovered a significant amount of US currency, amounting to tens of thousands of dollars, stored in a bank bag.
