The party, which includes prominent members such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, has risen as a leading force on the progressive wing of the Democratic Party after several DSA‑backed candidates defeated establishment rivals in primary contests this summer.
Romer confirmed her support for defunding the Pentagon, replacing the Supreme Court and the presidency as they currently exist, and advocated for government or public ownership of most large corporations. She described the Senate as an anachronistic institution designed to protect entrenched power and called for a significant expansion of Congress that would result in a unicameral legislature.
In discussing long‑term policy goals, Romer outlined a strategy to address immigration and prison reform through economic restructuring. She stated that reducing economic destabilization would lower migration pressures and that a rebuilt economy would create a society that works for all.
When asked about the prison system, Romer explained that most inmates are incarcerated for crimes of poverty. She argued that eliminating the conditions that give rise to such crimes would dramatically shrink the prison population, allowing society to reconsider the necessity of the current prison model.
The DSA’s growing influence is evident as the party pushes for radical reforms ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, positioning itself as a central player in shaping the nation’s political landscape.
