A seven-month-old baby girl, Kaori Patterson-Moore, is gone, a victim of senseless violence in Brooklyn. The tragedy unfolded on a Wednesday afternoon as her mother pushed her in a stroller, her father and two-year-old brother nearby. A hail of gunfire shattered the peace, sending the family scrambling for safety.
They dove into a nearby bodega, desperately seeking shelter from the bullets. But Kaori was struck, and despite swift transport to a local hospital, doctors couldn’t save her. The vibrant life of a child extinguished in an instant, leaving a family and a city reeling in grief.
The two men suspected in the shooting were captured on surveillance video attempting a desperate escape. They raced down a one-way street, going the wrong way, on a moped, a reckless flight from the consequences of their actions.
Their escape was short-lived. The moped collided violently with a black sedan, sending both suspects flying forward, crashing onto the hard pavement. They struggled to regain their footing, one visibly injured, hopping on one leg.
Despite the impact, their immediate concern wasn’t for potential injuries, but for gathering scattered belongings. They briefly returned to the wrecked moped before attempting to disappear into the surrounding streets. Their actions, captured on camera, would ultimately lead to their capture.
Authorities have identified 21-year-old Amuri Greene as the suspected triggerman, a known associate of a Brooklyn gang. Investigators are exploring the possibility that Kaori’s father was the intended target, a chilling thought that underscores the senselessness of the attack.
Greene, who was riding on the back of the moped, suffered a broken leg in the crash. He was initially arrested on unrelated domestic violence charges while being treated at the hospital. Now, he faces far more serious accusations: one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
The second suspect, 18-year-old Matthew Rodriguez, the driver of the moped, was apprehended in Pennsylvania by NYPD detectives working with the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force. Charges are pending as the investigation continues.
The weapon used in the shooting remains unrecovered, though police have collected two shell casings from the scene. The search continues, hoping to link the evidence directly to the suspects and build a solid case.
NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, visibly moved, addressed the city with a heavy heart. She described the crime as a “tragedy that truly shocks the conscious,” and spoke of the unimaginable pain the family must be enduring, a pain she, as a mother, could scarcely comprehend.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The city mourns Kaori, a tiny life stolen too soon, and seeks justice for a family shattered by violence.
